Get to know the Lykoi Cat
a.k.a. the Werewolf Cat
History
If you dig into the history of the Lykoi, you'll find the breed credited to the breeders Brittney and Johnny Gobble along with Patti Thomas. After chancing across some unique looking litters, they let the cats breed, and the Lykoi emerged. The breed's name comes from the Greek word for wolves. In 2014, they achieved TICA recognition as a “New Preliminary Race” (NVP). Everyone on the committee accepted the new race without objection. They are now a new race and can begin to integrate into the NVP. In May 2015 they sent the documents to TICA in Austria so that they can have full recognition of a new breed. The Lykoi is officially acknowledged by the International Cat Association (TICA), and was granted full championship status in 2016.
Beginning
The first Lykoi cats were a brother and sister named Silver Lining and Ray of Hope, found in a shelter in Virginia USA by Patti Thomas in 2010. The breed was initially developed by Thomas as well as a vet, Johnny Gobble and his wife Brittney Gobble who carried out extensive health testing to ensure that the cats were healthy, looking in particular at the health of the skin and heart. An extensive outcrossing programme was undertaken by breeders using Domestic Shorthairs and a small number of unrelated additional cats of Lykoi appearance found in other locations.
Personality
When you find yourself living with a Lykoi, you'll immediately notice just how smart these cats are. As a breed, they're inquisitive, curious and great problem solvers--so you'll want to ensure that you have a stash of interactive cat toys available, plus a batch of play items that are rotated regularly. Keeping your Lykoi mentally stimulated will help bring out the best in this breed's personality. Along with being a super smart kitty and a feline that you can teach to play games of fetch. the Lykoi is generally an all around energetic cat who loves to stay active. Make sure you have adequate space and scope for climbing missions if you're considering adopting a Lykoi. Fortunately, at the end of a hard day's playing, the Lykoi loves nothing more than to cuddle up with the humans in their life and enjoy some well deserved relaxation time.
Characteristics
Very Active, Intelligent, Curious, Friendly, Playful & Loyal. Many compare them to being dog like in nature. If socialized properly they are great with small children, dogs and other cats. They make the perfect companion for other active cat breeds such as the Bengal. They enjoy being with people, playing alone, and playing with toys. And when there’s more than one Lykoi in the same space, they get along really well. These cats also like to play fetch, chase, and hunt, and they enjoy sitting contentedly in a warm lap whenever they aren’t active as a result of their high energy level.
The Lykoi is truly unique.
The Lykoi has to be one of the most intriguing of all cat breeds. Looking like a werewolf or a creature of folklore.
